FIDE Grand Prix 2017
The FIDE Grand Prix 2017 was a series of chess tournaments with the participation of the world's best that took place between February 2017 and November 2017. The two first placed qualified for the candidates tournament in Berlin 2018 for the chess world championship 2018 against the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen from Norway. The Grand Prix venues were Sharjah , Moscow , Geneva and Palma de Mallorca .

The Grand Prix consisted of four tournaments with 18 players each. 24 top players from the world took part, each of them playing in three tournaments. The tournaments took place according to the Swiss system with nine rounds, in contrast to the Grand Prix of previous years, which had been round tournaments.
In each of the tournaments points were awarded as shown in the table below. In the event of a tie, the points were shared; there was no fine evaluation.
In the overall ranking, the placement of the players resulted from the sum of the points scored. With the same number of points, the following criteria (in descending priority) would have decided:
- Sum of the board points in the three tournaments played
- Number of games played with black pieces
- Number of winning games
- Number of games won with Black
- Come on
qualification
The 24 players were selected according to various criteria. The reigning world champion ( Magnus Carlsen ) and runner-up world champion ( Sergei Karjakin ) were eligible , but both waived. The field of participants consisted of
- 3 (semi) finalists of the 2015 World Cup : Pjotr Swidler , Pawel Eljanow and Anish Giri . The fourth (and cup winner) was Karjakin.
- 10 participants based on the world ranking: Michael Adams , Levon Aronjan , Ding Liren , Boris Gelfand , Alexander Grishchuk , P. Harikrishna , Dmitri Jakowenko , Şəhriyar Məmmədyarov , Hikaru Nakamura , Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
- 1 participant: Winner of the ACP Tour 2015: Yevgeny Tomaschewski
- 10 participants nominated by the organizer: Jon Ludvig Hammer , Hou Yifan , Ernesto Inarkiew , Li Chao , Jan Nepomnjaschtschi , Teymur Rəcəbov , Richárd Rapport , Alexander Rjasanzew , Saleh Salem , Francisco Vallejo Pons

Overall result
Məmmədyarov won the Grand Prix before Grishchuk. Both qualified for the candidates tournament. Previously, Aronjan and Ding had already secured their participation in the candidates' tournament as finalists of the 2017 World Cup .
