Abdul Rahman Saleh Salem (born January 4, 1993 in Sharjah ) is a chess player from the United Arab Emirates . In 2015 he was Asian champion.

Career

Early successes

In his childhood Salem was known as the “Arab child prodigy” of the game of chess and received the title of FIDE Master at the age of eight . In 2002 he took part in the junior competitions of the Chess Olympiad in the Slovenian city ​​of Bled (+1 = 1 −3). He won the U-10 classification of the Arab championships three times in a row from 2001 to 2003, the U-12 title in 2004 and the U-16 classification in 2005 and 2006. In addition, he finished in June 2006 shared first place at the U-14 Asian Championships held in Iran . During this time he was trained for a long time by the Latvian Grand Master Edvīns Ķeņģis . In September 2006 the United Arab Emirates Chess Federation (UAECF) signed a three-year scholarship contract for 500,000 UAE dirhams with the Damas jewelry chain. Salem received the money as financial support for tournaments, travel and training camps as well as in the form of monthly amounts.

Establishment at a high level

At tournaments in Dubai , Abu Dhabi and Sharjah between April and December 2008, Salem achieved the three standards required for the grandmaster title , which he was finally awarded in March 2009.

He represented his home country at the Pan-Arab Games in Cairo in 2007 and in Doha in 2011 and won the bronze medal in rapid chess singles in the latter event . He played on the first board for the United Arab Emirates at the 2008 Chess Olympiads in Dresden (+4 = 2 −4), 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk (+7 = 3 −1), and 2012 in Istanbul (+4 = 3 −2 ), 2014 in Tromsø (+6 = 0 −2) and 2016 in Baku (+5 = 3 −1).

In 2014 Salem won the Arab championships (7/9) in the Jordanian capital Amman and in August 2015 he won the Asian Championships in front of a home crowd in Al-Ain with seven points from nine games. He is the first player from Arab countries to become Asian champions.

So far, Salem, who is currently being trained by Ivan Sokolov , has taken part in the world championship cycle three times : in 2011 , 2013 and 2015 he qualified for the World Cup . Every time he was eliminated in the first round - in 2011 with 0: 2 against Dmitri Jakowenko , in 2013 with ½: 1½ against Anish Giri and in 2015 with the same result against Wei Yi .
