Norway Chess (also called Altibox Norway Chess after the sponsor ) is an international chess tournament that is held annually. The first tournament took place from May 7th to 18th, 2013 with ten participants in Stavanger , Norway. The group of participants included seven players from the top 10 with the highest Elo rating in the FIDE World Ranking. The winner was Sergei Karjakin . In 2015 Norway Chess was part of the first Grand Chess Tour .
The fourth edition was held from April 18-30, 2016. The Norwegian telecommunications company Altibox acted as sponsor . A second participation in the Grand Chess Tour was waived.
The sixth Norway Chess tournament took place from May 28th to June 7th 2018 and, as in the previous year, reached tournament category 22 . Ding Liren was eliminated from the tournament due to an injury. Since he had completed less than half of his games by then, these were not taken into account when determining the results.
The seventh edition of the tournament took place in Stavanger from June 3 to 15, 2019 and, as in the previous year, reached tournament category 22.
For the first time, a new tiebreak regulation was tried out. The winner of the game with the classic time limit (120 minutes per player plus 10 seconds per move after move 40) received two points. If this game ended in a draw, both players received half a point and then played a quick game with the same color distribution, in which White got 10 minutes and Black got 7 minutes, with an addition of 3 seconds per move from move 61. The winner of this game received one more point; in the event of a draw, the point went to Black.
