Simen Agdestein (born May 15, 1967 in Asker ) is a Norwegian chess grandmaster and former professional football player .
Football career
Agdestein played football as a striker for Lyn Oslo (1984-1992) and made eight appearances in the Norwegian national football team . His national team career, during which he scored a goal, ended because, contrary to the wishes of the national coach, he did not want to move abroad to improve his level. In 1989 he turned down a contract offer from Beşiktaş Istanbul . In 1992, a serious knee injury ended his professional career.
Chess career
Single successes
He also attracted attention early on as a chess player: in 1982, at the age of 15, he became Norwegian national champion for the first time. In 1985 he was the first Norwegian to receive the grandmaster title. In 1986 he was runner-up at the World Youth Championships in Gausdal ; behind the winner Walter Arencibia , but ahead of future world-class players like Yevgeny Bareev and Viswanathan Anand .
At the end of July 1989 Simen Agdestein played the zone tournament in Espoo , which he won in front of Margeir Pétursson and Bent Larsen . Participants were 14 grandmasters who played a round-robin tournament 15 km from the center of Helsinki .
As a chess player he was national champion of Norway seven times, most recently in 2005. In 1999 he won the famous Open in Cappelle-la-Grande , and in 2003 an Open in Port Erin (Isle of Man). In July 2013 he won the Open Sant Martí i Barcelona with 8.5 / 9 (rating 2901).
Team chess
National team
Agdestein took part in nine Chess Olympiads with the Norwegian national team between 1982 and 2014 . When he first participated in 1982 , he achieved the best individual result on the fourth board.
Club chess
Simen Agdestein is a member of the Oslo Schakselskap and became Norwegian team champion with them in 2013 , 2014 and 2015 . He also took part in the European Club Cup six times with the Oslo Schakselskap . In the German Federal Chess League he played from 1998 to 2000 at the Delmenhorster Schachklub and from 2000 to 2003 at the Lübeck Chess Club from 1873 , with which he was German team champion in 2001 , 2002 and 2003 . In the British Four Nations Chess League , Agdestein played a total of three competitions for Wood Green between 2001 and 2004 .
Life
In Norway he is also known for his participation in the TV show Skal vi danse .
He trained the later world chess champion Magnus Carlsen , about whose early chess career he wrote a book. He works as a teacher at a sports high school in Oslo and writes chess articles for the newspaper Verdens Gang .
Agdestein was married to Marianne Aasen (born February 21, 1967 in Bergen ), a member of the Arbeiderpartiet in Storting , and has three children. His older brother Espen (* 1965) is also a chess player and holds the title of FIDE master .
