Helgi Ólafsson (born August 15, 1956 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic chess player.

Career

Helgi Ólafsson received the title of International Master from FIDE in 1978 , then the title of Grand Master in 1985 . Since 2009 he has also held the title of FIDE Senior Trainer. He won the Icelandic Championship in 1978, 1981, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1996.

In January 2015, he is in fourth place in the Icelandic Elo ranking.

Helgi Ólafsson took part with the Icelandic national team in 16 chess Olympiads between 1976 and 2014 , as well as in the 1993 team world championships and the European team championships in 1992, 2011 and 2015 (in the second Icelandic team).
