Guðmundur Sigurjónsson (born September 25, 1947 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic chess player . Guðmundur Sigurjónsson received the title of International Master from FIDE in 1970 , and in 1975 he became the second Grandmaster of Iceland after Friðrik Ólafsson . He won the Icelandic championship in 1965, 1968 and 1972. In 1966 , 1968 , 1970 , 1972 , 1974 , 1978 , 1980 , 1982 , 1984 and 1986 he took part in the chess Olympiads for Iceland at the Interzonal Rio de Janeiro 1979 and the following Candidates Tournament he was the second of Robert Huebner . Guðmundur Sigurjónsson was one of the first foreign players in the German Federal Chess League ; he played from 1980 to 1985 in the first team of SG Porz and became German team champion with them in 1982 and 1984 . In Iceland, Guðmundur Sigurjónsson played for the team from Taflfélag Reykjavíkur, with whom he also took part in the 1999 European Club Cup .

Guðmundur Sigurjónsson is hardly active in chess anymore. The last rated tournament game he played at the European Club Cup in 1999. After that, he only played the Reykjavík Edda rapid chess tournament in 2003 . His Elo rating has remained unchanged since January 2000, at 2,463, and his highest rating of 2,530 was achieved in 1976.
