Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson (born July 18, 1972 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic chess player .
In 1987 he won the U16 World Championship in Innsbruck . He was able to win the Icelandic individual championship several times: 1998, 1999, 2001 to 2008, 2010 and 2013. He played for Iceland in fourteen chess Olympiads : 1992 to 2018 . He also took part in the European team championships seven times (1992, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2013 to 2017) and once in the team world championship (1993) in Lucerne . In the German Bundesliga , he played in the 2003/04 season for Bremen SG , in the Danish Skakligaen in the 2014/15 season for the Jets Mark Skakklub and in the Czech Extra League in the 2007/08 season for TJ Tatran Litovel and from 2008 to 2010 for the team from Mahrla Prague , with whom he became champions in 2009 .
At the FIDE World Chess Championship in 1999 , he beat Olexander Subarjew in the first round and was eliminated in the second round against Sergei Schipow . At the FIDE World Chess Championship 2000 , he failed in the first round to Viktor Bologan .
In 1988 he was awarded the title of International Master (IM). He was awarded the title of Grand Master (GM) in 1993.
