Sergei Jurjewitsch Schipow ( Russian Серге́й Ю́рьевич Ши́пов , scientific transliteration Sergej Jur'evič Šipov , at the World Chess Federation FIDE Sergei Shipov ; born April 17, 1966 in Murom ) is a Russian chess master , journalist and author.

Life

Schipow learned to play chess at the age of four from his father. In the early 1970s he moved with his family from his hometown Murom to Kirschatsch , where he was a member of the local chess club as a teenager. In 1979 he attended a sports boarding school in Moscow , where he was instructed by chess coaches. In the 1980s he studied physics at Lomonosov University in Moscow and graduated in 1991.

In 1992 he became International Master , four years later FIDE awarded him the title of Grand Master . Schipow took part in four finals for the Russian championship (1994, 1998, 2001 and 2003), with his best result falling in 1998, when he shared first to fourth place (together with Alexander Morozevich , Pyotr Swidler and Konstantin Sakayev ). In the same year Schipow won the Russian championship in blitz chess . In 2004 he won Russia’s first international blitz chess championship.

One of his greatest successes in international tournaments is his victory in the Tromsø Open in 2006, where he was unbeaten first with 7.5 out of 9 and, among other things, defeated the future world champion Magnus Carlsen .

In the 1990s Schipow was a training partner of the 13th world chess champion Garry Kasparov . In later years he trained talented youngsters, whereby his long-term collaboration with Daniil Dubow stands out. He is currently devoting his coaching work to the young grandmaster Andrei Yessipenko , who is considered one of Russia's greatest talents.

Schipow almost completely gave up tournament play in the 2010s and shifted a focus of his work (in addition to training talents) to live commentary on various high-class chess events on the Internet. He comments exclusively in Russian, including on his own website.

He is also the author of numerous articles in the specialist press (especially Internet publications) and several chess books, some of which have been translated into English.
