Pjotr ​​Weniaminowitsch Swidler ( Russian Пётр Вениаминович Свидлер , scientific transliteration Pëtr Veniaminovič Svidler , FIDE designation Peter Svidler ; born June 17, 1976 in Leningrad ) is a Russian chess player . Among the current top players in the world, Swidler is an expert in the Grünfeld-Indian defense .

Career

Swidler learned chess when he was 6 years old. In 1994 he won the U18 youth world champion title in Szeged and was named grandmaster in the same year . His most significant successes include eight Russian championships : 1994, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2017 (in 1998 he won together with Alexander Morozevich , who had the better rating and was declared champion).

Swidler's greatest successes were the victories in Tilburg in 1997, where he defeated the reigning world champion Garri Kasparow , as well as at the Dortmund Chess Days 1998 (together with Wladimir Kramnik and Michael Adams ). He was also successful in Biel / Bienne 2000. In 2001 he reached the semi-finals of the FIDE KO World Chess Championship (in Moscow ), but lost to the eventual winner Ruslan Ponomarjow with 1.5: 2.5. In 2003 he shared 1st place at the very strong Aeroflot Open in Moscow.

In 2003 Swidler replaced Péter Lékó as world champion of the Chess960 chess form (held annually in Mainz ), but lost this title to Lewon Aronjan in 2006 . He took part in the FIDE world championship tournament with 8 participants in San Luis (Argentina) in 2005, where he achieved an excellent result with 8.5 out of 14, which led to a shared second place with the Indian Viswanathan Anand . At the 2007 World Cup tournament in Mexico City , Swidler finished fifth with eight participants.

In February 2008 he won the Dortelcom Masters in Gibraltar after a playoff against Vadim Milov . In September 2011 he won the KO chess world cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia . In the final he prevailed against Alexander Grishchuk with 2.5: 1.5 . In four other participations in the World Chess Cup , Swidler reached the quarter-finals in 2009 , 2013 and 2017 , and the second round in 2007 .

Swidler has been a member of the Russian national team since the mid-1990s. He participated in the Chess Olympiads in 1994 , 1996 , 1998 , 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 , 2010 and 2014 . With the team he won in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002 and reached second place in 2004 and 2010, in the individual ranking he achieved the third-best result on the fourth board in 1996. Swidler took part in the team world championship in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2011 and 2017. In 1997 and 2005 he won both with the team and in the individual ranking of his board (1997 on the second, 2005 on the first board), in 2001 he reached second place with the team. At the European Team Championships took Svidler 1997, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013, in part. He won with the team in 2003 and 2007, came second in 1997 and 2009 and third in 2013.In the individual ranking, he achieved both the best result on the first board in 2007 and the best Elo performance of all participants, in 2005 on the first and in 2013 on second board the second best result and 1997 on the second board the third best result.
