German Chess League 2008/09
The 2008/09 season of the German Federal Chess League was won by the OSG Baden-Baden . It was the fourth championship title in a row for the club. The SK Turm Emsdetten , Bayern Munich , the USV TU Dresden and the Schachfreunde Berlin were newly promoted from the 2nd Bundesliga . Emsdetten was able to hold the class, Berlin, Bayern Munich and Dresden ended up as well as SG Trier on relegation places. However, since TV Tegernsee (which had already announced before the start of the season that it would voluntarily withdraw from the 1st division after this season) and SC Kreuzberg withdrew their teams and neither SG Porz as winners of the 2nd Bundesliga West nor SG Bochum 31 as second in this class exercise their right to promotion, Berlin, Trier and Bayern Munich stayed in the 1st Bundesliga.

Remarkable
The reigning world chess champion Viswanathan Anand was registered on board one for OSG Baden-Baden , but only played the last two rounds and won both games. The youngest grandmaster in the world at the end of the season , 14-year-old Anish Giri, played for Emsdetten . He was able to convince and got seven out of eleven possible points.
Baden-Baden did not lose a single match and only drew twice. Dresden, on the other hand, could not keep up and lost all 15 matches.
Alexei Schirow's victory against Łukasz Cyborowski was voted the best game of the season .
