The SG Trier is one of the oldest still existing German chess clubs and the largest chess club in the Rhineland-Palatinate Chess Federation .

timeline

In 1877 the first chess club was founded in Trier . Very little is known from the founding time of the chess club, as a club history from this time no longer exists and one is therefore dependent on the newspaper archive of the Trier City Library . On June 25, 2008, the two largest Trier clubs, SC Trier-Süd and SG Turm Trier 1877, merged into a joint club under the current name.

The sport of chess was brought to life in Trier by the music teacher Otto Hunger when he was looking for chess friends who wanted to play the royal game in the club. The first mention of the founding of the Trier chess club in April 1877 can be found in the edition of the Trierischer Volksfreundes of April 24, 1877. On June 18, 1877, after the club had existed for two months, the German Chess Federation was founded in Leipzig .
