Top 16 (chess) 2005/06
The Top 16 2005/06 was the 26th French team championship in chess .
Champion became Paris NAO for the fourth time in a row . The Club de Cavalier Bleu Drancy , the Club de Thomas Bourgneuf Créteil , the Club de La Tour Sarrazine Antibes and the Cercle d'Echecs de Strasbourg were promoted from the Nationale II . In purely sporting terms, Strasbourg and Créteil would have been relegated together with the Club de Echiquier Nanceien and the Club de Echiquier des Papes Avignon , but since two clubs, the CEMC Monaco and the Club de Echiquier Niçois, withdrew their team and Nancy also waived, Strasbourg and Créteil still reached relegation.

mode
The tournament was divided into a preliminary round and a final round. The 16 participating teams were divided into two groups of eight ( Groupe A and Groupe B ) and played a simple round-robin tournament in these . The first four of both groups played in Poule Haute , the last four in Poule Basse against relegation. Teams that met in the preliminary round did not play against each other again in the final round. First, the total of the team points achieved in the preliminary and final rounds (3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for a defeat, 0 points for a defeat without a fight) decided on the placement, then the direct comparison, then the difference between Winning and losing games (not taking into account competitions between participants in the Poule Haute and Poule Basse) and ultimately the number of winning games.
Game dates
The competitions were held from February 3 to 5, from March 30 to April 2 and from May 4 to 7, 2006. In Groupe A, two competitions were played in Paris and Clichy in the first three rounds , while the fourth to seventh round was organized centrally in Montpellier . In Groupe B, two competitions were played in Monaco and Nancy in the first three rounds , while the fourth to seventh rounds were held centrally in Gonfreville-l'Orcher . All of the Poule Haute and Poule Basse competitions took place in Asnières-sur-Seine .

Groupe A
While NAO and Clichy had already secured their places in the Poule Haute before the last round, Mulhouse (by beating Créteil) and Évry (by drawing against their direct rivals Montpellier) only qualified in the last round.

In the second group, Monaco, Bischwiller and Nice were already certain to take part in the Poule Haute before the last round, while Gonfreville secured fourth place in a long-distance duel with Cannes and Nancy.

Finals
Poule Haute
NAO and Monaco started with 7 wins in the Poule Haute and thus already had a clear lead over the field. Before the head-to-head comparison in the last round, NAO won all competitions, while Monaco drew against Clichy. NAO defended its title with a narrow victory in a direct comparison.

Poule Basse
From a purely sporting point of view, Strasbourg, Créteil and Avignon had three relegated teams before the last lap, while Nancy was overtaken by Antibes and Drancy after a defeat in the final lap and fell back to a relegation zone. Due to the aforementioned withdrawals, however, Strasbourg and Créteil still managed to stay in the league.
