Margeir Pétursson (born February 15, 1960 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic chess player and businessman who lives in Ukraine .

Margeir Pétursson received the title of International Master from FIDE in 1978 , then the title of Grand Master in 1986 . He won the Icelandic championship in 1986 and 1987.

His Elo rating is 2512 (as of August 2016), which puts him in sixth place in the Icelandic ranking.

National team

Margeir Pétursson took part with the Icelandic national team in all eleven chess Olympiads from 1976 to 1996 , also in the team world championship in 1993 and in the European team championships in 1992 and 2015 (in the second team).

societies

Margeir Pétursson played in the 1980s and 1990s for the team from Taflfélag Reykjavíkur , which won 21 Icelandic team championships between 1977 and 1998. With this he took part in the European Club Cup five times and reached the semi-finals as the greatest success in 1990.

Publications

In 1996 a book by Margeir Péturssons on the Awerbach system with the title King's Indian Defense: Averbakh Variation was published by the publisher Cadogan chess books.

Business career

MP Bank , founded by Margeir Pétursson, is the only commercial bank in Iceland that did not collapse during Iceland's financial crisis of 2008-2011 . In 2005 he bought a bank in Lviv, Ukraine . Margeir has had his permanent residence there since 2011.
