Predrag Nikolić (born September 11, 1960 in Bosanski Šamac , Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian chess player .

Life

Nikolić played for the first time in 1979 with the Yugoslav Championship and shared places 2 to 4. A year later he won the national championship and in 1984 repeated his success. In 1980 he played for the Yugoslav national team for the first time at the Chess Olympiad in Malta , in the same year he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE . In 1983 he became grandmaster and won the Sarajevo tournament that same year . In 1984 Nikolić won in Novi Sad , 1986 in Reykjavík , 1987 again in Sarajevo. When Interzonal of Zagreb he narrowly missed qualifying for the Candidates Tournament and was split 4 to 6. In 1989, he won together with Viswanathan Anand , ZOLTÁN RIBLI and Gyula Sax , the traditional tournament in Wijk aan Zee , the same year he won the Milan Vidmar -Memorial in Portorož / Ljubljana .

At the interzonal tournament in Manila in 1990 he qualified for the candidates tournament for the first time: He shared places 4 to 11. In the round of 16 of the candidate fights, he was eliminated in Sarajevo in 1991 against Boris Gelfand . The competition ended 4: 4 (+2 = 4 −2), but Gelfand won one of the two trickling games in rapid chess while the other was drawn . In the same year Nikolić defeated the sensationally returned Brazilian Henrique da Costa Mecking in a match in São Paulo with 3.5: 2.5 (+1 = 5 −0). Also in 1991 he won the top-class tournaments in Bled and Rogaška Slatina .

During his stay at the Buenos Aires tournament in 1992 (2nd place), the Bosnian War broke out. Nikolić then took up his new residence in 1993, together with the Bosnian Ivan Sokolov , in the Netherlands . In 1994 he won again in Wijk aan Zee and in 1997 took part in the Dutch national championship , where he and Jan Timman came first in Rotterdam . Nikolić won the subsequent playoff with 2.5: 1.5 (+1 = 3 −0), also in Rotterdam. In 1998 he was third at the state championship, and in 1999 again winner. Nikolić, who competes in the Chess Olympiads for Bosnia and Herzegovina but still lives in the Netherlands ( Oegstgeest ), did not take part in any other championships in his host country. In 2002 and 2003 he won Selfoss , each time together with his compatriot Ivan Sokolov. In 2004 he celebrated the greatest success of his career when he won the European championship together with Vasyl Ivanchuk in Antalya . However, the Bosnian lost the subsequent playoff in rapid chess with 0: 2. In 2007 he became the Bosnian national champion in Sarajevo. In February 2015 he is behind Borki Predojević in second place in the Bosnian Elo ranking, which he had led for a long time. In November 2015 Nikolić won the Senior World Championship in Acqui Terme with 9.5 points from 11 games .

National team

Nikolić participated with the Yugoslav national team between 1980 and 1990 in five Chess Olympiads , with the Bosnian national team between 1992 and 2008 in seven Chess Olympiads. With the team he reached third place in 1980 and second in 1994, and in 1980 he achieved the best result on the second reserve board in the individual ranking. At the team world championship in 1989 he reached second place with Yugoslavia and achieved the second-best individual result on the second board. Nikolić took part in the team championship in chess four times , in 1983 he was second with Yugoslavia and achieved the best individual result on the third board, in 1992, 1997 and 1999 he represented Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the Bosnian Premijer Liga, Nikolić played for ŠK Kiseljak in 2002, 2004 and 2005 , in 2007 for ŠK Bihać , in 2009 for TŠK Sloboda Tuzla and from 2011 to 2013 for ŠK Bosna Sarajevo , with which he became champions in 2011 and 2013.

Nikolić has been playing in the German Federal Chess League since 1998 for the Solingen chess company , won the German Blitzmannschaftsmeisterschaft in Solingen in 2002 and became German team champion with her in 2016 .

In the Dutch Meester class he played from 2001 to 2012 for the Hilversums Schaakgenootschap , with which he became champions in 2008 , 2009 , 2010 and 2011 , and since 2013 he has played for the Leidsch Schaakgenootschap , with which he won the title in 2018 and 2019 .
