Portorož ( Italian Portorose , from Italian porto = harbor, rose = roses ; sloven . Roža = flower , dt. Outdated rose port ) is a district of the municipality of Piran and a health resort with 2800 inhabitants on the Slovenian Adriatic coast ( Slovenian Riviera ) in Istria .
description
The main town is closely connected to the Minorite Monastery of St. Franziskus , which was built in the 13th century and was accessible by water . Portorož experienced its boom towards the end of the 19th century, when spa facilities and the first outdoor pool were built here. It has been an important source of income for Slovenian tourism, especially since the 1990s. The site, which has no historical center is dominated by the large hotel complexes Lifeclass Hotels & Spa , Palace Hotel Operator Kempinski and Hotels St. Bernardin , by the casino and the fenced Marina (the marina ). The basically concreted or rocky coast is compensated by the thermal baths in the hotels and a small artificially raised sandy beach in the center.
Attractions
- In the vicinity of Portorož are the Sečovlje salt pans with the Salt Museum and Portorož Airport .
- Forma Viva is a green, tree-lined exhibition park with monumental stone sculptures in the open air on the ridge of the Seca peninsula. Since 1961, the predominantly abstract sculptures made exclusively from Istrian stone have been continuously created there as part of the international sculptors' meeting Forma Viva . From there you have a wide view of the bay in front of Portorož. Entry to the spacious open-air gallery is free.
traffic
Between 1909 and 1912 the district was the end point of the Gleislose Bahn Pirano – Portorose , one of the first trolleybus operators in Austria . This in turn was linked in Portorož with the former local railway Trieste – Parenzo . From 1912 to 1953, a five-kilometer tram ran between Piran and Portorož with a 760 millimeter gauge, which is unusual for a tram .
The 27 km long main road Trieste – Koper – Portorož was completed in 1936.
