The Kempinski Palace Hotel in the Slovenian seaside resort of Portorož is a five-star luxury hotel of the Kempinski hotel group. The hotel, built in 1910, was one of the largest and most magnificent hotels in the upper Adriatic when it opened .

history

In 1879, a Piran doctor began treating rheumatism with the help of the medicinal salt and brine deposits near Portorož. Due to the healing climatic conditions of the place and the increasing number of spa treatments, Portorož was declared a spa and seaside resort by the Imperial and Royal Interior Ministry on June 25, 1897. At this time Portorož developed into one of the most elegant seaside resorts on the Austrian Riviera, alongside Grado and Opatija . In 1908 the Viennese architect Johann Eustacchio was commissioned to plan the Palace Hotel, which was officially opened on August 20, 1910. The architecture, kept in the style of historicism , took up various stylistic elements of the Neo-Renaissance and the Vienna Secession , and the hotel was geared towards the needs of the better society of the Danube Monarchy in all its furnishings . In addition to cultural and sporting events, the Portorož casino, which opened in Villa San Lorenzo in 1913, became a special attraction for spa guests.

Tourism stagnated in Portorož in the interwar period , and it was not until the 1960s that celebrities from politics and the film industry were guests in the hotel.

During the 1970s, the hotel suffered from poor management by the Yugoslav local government, including a. cut direct access to the sea. In 1980 the hotel was closed and three years later the main building and the hotel's own outdoor facilities were listed as a historical monument. After brief attempts to revive the operation of the hotel, it was finally closed in 1990.

After Slovenia gained independence in 1994, the hotel became the property of the Piran Municipality . In May 2003, a 99-year lease contract was signed with the Slovenian Istrabenz Group from Koper , which renovated the hotel for around 70 million euros by 2008 and entered into a contract with the Kempinski Group to operate the hotel for at least 20 years. During the renovation, the main building was completely gutted except for the listed facade , expanded and reopened on October 18, 2008.
