Slovenian Riviera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Slovenian Riviera is about 46 kilometers long part of Slovenia on the Adriatic coast . The term riviera is derived from the Italian or French word riva or rive for shore and originally referred to the Franco-Italian coastline of the Ligurian Sea .

The Slovenian Riviera is a stretch of coast in the north of the Istrian peninsula . It stretches between the Italian border in the north and the Croatian border in the south and as such is part of the Istrian Riviera .

The region, which is characterized by the Venetian or Italian style of construction and lifestyle, consists largely of rocky coasts with several yachts and fishing ports. The cities along this coast often have picturesque old towns. The most important cities are Koper (Italian: Capodistria ), Izola (Italian: Isola ), Piran (Italian: Pirano ) and the seaside resort of Portorož (Italian: Portorose ).
