Leif Erlend Johannessen (born April 14, 1980 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian chess player .
successes
In 1999 he was second behind Berge Østenstad at the Norwegian individual championship . In the same year he became the Norwegian master of blitz chess . At the Norwegian individual championship in 2000 he was third, in 2001 again second, this time behind Einar Gausel . In January 2002 he won the OSS Grand Masters tournament in Oslo and in April of the same year the 6th United Insurance Master in Dhaka , Bangladesh. In January 2004 he won the Excelsior Cup in Gothenburg , in August of that year he was tied for first at the Politiken Cup in Taastrup . In 2005 he finished third in the Norwegian individual championship. Leif Erlend Johannessen took part in the 2013 World Chess Cup in Tromsø , but failed in the first round to Péter Lékó .
For the Norwegian national team he played in 1995 at the U16 Chess Olympiad on the Canary Islands on the first board. At the European Team Championships in Gothenburg in 2005 he played on the first board with an Elo rating of 2647. He took part in six Chess Olympiads : 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 and 2014 . At the 2010 Chess Olympiad , he coached the Norwegian women's national team. In addition, Johannessen took part in the European Team Championships in 2005, 2009 and 2011 .
He plays club chess in Norway with the Oslo Schakselskap , of which he is vice-president. With this he became Norwegian team champion in 2007 , 2008 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2014 and 2015 and took part in the European Club Cup eight times between 2004 and 2015 . In the German Federal Chess League he played for SV Wattenscheid from 2002 to 2013 . In the British 4NCL he played from 2004 to 2006 for the Betsson.com team . He also played in the Icelandic team championship. In Portugal he plays for Mata de Benfica from Lisbon. He last played in the Swedish Elitserien in the 2004/05 season , for Lunds ASK . In the Dutch Meester class , Johanessen played for Zuid-Limburg in the 2018/19 season .
In 1999 he became International Master , and since 2002 he has held the title of Grand Master . He achieved the first norm for this in Oslo, the second in Southampton Parish on the Bermuda Islands and the third at the Siegeman tournament in Malmö . In February 2015 he is in fourth place in the Norwegian Elo ranking.

Ng1 – f3 Ng8 – f6 4. Nb1 – c3 d5xc4 5. a2 – a4 Bc8 – f5 6. Nf3 – e5 Nb8 – d7 7. Ne5xc4 Qd8 – c7 following the familiar moves 8. g2 – g3 e7 – e5 9. d4xe5 Nd7xe5 10. Bc1 – f4 Nf6 – d7 11. Bf1– g2 g7 – g5 12. Nc4 – e3 g5xf4 13. Ne3xf5 0–0–0 14. Qd1 – c2 Nd7 – c5 15. 0–0 Nc5 – e6 16. Qc2 – e4 f4xg3 17. h2xg3 a7 – a5 the new move 18 Nc3 – b5N !! , from which he had learned that Peter Heine Nielsen had analyzed him for profit. In Informator No. 92, Johannessens Zug was recognized as the best innovation .
The father of the innovation 18. Nb5 is Peter Heine Nielsen, who found and analyzed it together with Jan Gustafsson . Nielsen showed the train to his then student Magnus Carlsen , who in turn passed it on to his colleague in the Norwegian national team, Leif Erlend Johannessen.
Private
Johannessen is a lawyer by profession. He is married.
For the Norsk Sjakkblad , the official organ of the Norwegian Chess Federation, he writes a column called Leffis lille lure . Together with the Norwegian chess player Sverre Johnsen (* 1964) he wrote a book about the Saizew variant in the Spanish game.
