Ivan Šarić (born August 17, 1990 in Split ) is a Croatian chess player .
Life
Šarić already shone as a youngster with his great talent: In addition to multiple first placements at Croatian youth championships of various ages in 2006, 2007, 2008 and most recently in 2009, he became European youth champion U18 in 2007 at the European youth championship held in Šibenik . The following year Šarić was in Vũng Tàu youth world champion in the same age category. After grandmaster results in Pula in 2007 (shared second place) and at the European Championships in Plovdiv in 2008, FIDE awarded him the title of grandmaster.
His other successes include tournament victories in Zagreb and Velika Gorica in 2006 and in Rijeka in 2008 and Stari Mikanovci and Pula in 2009. At the Croatian individual championships in 2008, he shared first place with Mladen Palac , to which he was defeated in the subsequent playoff. At the national championships in 2009 he was tied first again and defeated Alojzije Janković in the subsequent playoff after an opening defeat with 2.5: 1.5. In January 2014 he won the B group at the Tata Steel chess tournament with 10 points from 13 games. In August of the same year he achieved a highly regarded victory against the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen at the Chess Olympiad in Tromsø .
In March 2018 he became European chess champion in Batumi with 8.5 points from 11 games .
Šarić is number 1 in the Croatian ranking (as of March 2018).

National team
With the Croatian national team, Šarić took part in the Chess Olympiads 2010 , 2012 and 2014 and the European Team Championships in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

He has played in the German 1st Bundesliga since 2011 for SV 1930 Hockenheim and in the Spanish team championship since 2015 for Mérida Patrimonio de la Humanidad . In the Hungarian team championship, Šarić has played for Pénzügyőr Sport Egyesület since 2017 , and in the Slovakian extra league since 2018 for ŠK Modra . In the Czech extra league he will play for Moravská Slavia Brno in the 2019/20 season . In Italy he played in the team championship for the first time in 2019 and won the championship with the 'Obiettivo Risarcimento' team from Padova.
