Vlatko (Vladimir, Vlado) Kovačević (born March 26, 1942 in Dubrovnik ) is a Croatian chess grandmaster .

Tournament player

Vlatko Kovačević became internationally known in 1970 when he shared 9th place in a tournament victory for Robert James Fischer in Rovinj-Zagreb, but could beat Fischer in the direct match. His breakthrough came in 1976. He won a tournament in Sombor and shared a victory in Virovitica. In 1977 he shared the victory at the tournament in Karlovac , won 1979 in Zagreb and in Virovitica. Further victories followed: Maribor 1980, Tusla 1981, Zagreb 1986. Kovačević was named International Master by FIDE in 1970 and Grand Master in 1976. His highest rating was 2560 in 1982.

National team

Kovačević took part in six Chess Olympiads. In 1982 , 1984 and 1988 he played for the Yugoslav national team. In 1990 he achieved his greatest success at an Olympics. Yugoslavia provided an additional B team as hosts, in which Kovačević played on the 4th board and was the third best player of the tournament in this position. 1992 and 1998 he was in the selection of Croatia. He also reached second place with Yugoslavia at the European Team Championships in 1983 and 1989.
