Jeffery Xiong (born October 30, 2000 in Plano ) is an American chess player . He won the grandmaster title as the second youngest player in the United States at the time. His greatest chess success so far was winning the Junior World Championship in 2016.

Chess career

Xiong learned to play chess at the age of five. In 2008 he started to train with Grand Master Babakuli Annakov . At the 2010 World Youth Championship in Porto Carras , he won the silver medal in the U10 age group and at the same time achieved the title of FIDE master .

He achieved the required standards for the title of International Master (IM) from January to March 2013 at the "4th Annual Golden State Open", the "2013 UT Dallas Spring FIDE Open" and the "7th Annual Philadelphia Open". The title was awarded to him the following year when he reached the required Elo rating of at least 2400 points.

After he finished the "23rd Annual Chicago Open" and the "UTDallas Fall FIDE Open" in 2014 as well as the "24th Annual Chicago Open" in 2015 with the number of points required for the grandmaster standard and exceeded the required Elo rating of at least 2500 points, In 2015, at the age of 14 years and 7 months, he became the second youngest American chess grandmaster behind Samuel Sevian (grandmaster at the age of 13 years and 11 months). In September of that year the title was formally confirmed at the 86th FIDE Congress. Xiong is currently third in the list of the youngest US grandmasters after his compatriot Awonder Liang won the title in 2017 at the age of 14 years and 2 months.

In July 2015, Xiong finished second in the US Junior Closed Chess Championship and won the 2015 GM Norm Invitational in Saint Louis that same month.

In February 2016, Xiong made it into the top ten strongest junior players. At the United States Chess Championship in April 2016, to which he was invited for the first time, he finished sixth. In June of that year he won the Grupo Premier (second group next to the elite field) of the “Capablanca Memorial” in Varadero and the “US Junior Closed Chess Championship” the month after. His greatest success so far was in August 2016 when he won the Junior World Championship in Bhubaneswar (India) . He was already the winner with one lap to go.

As of November 2016, Xiong was one of the 100 strongest players in the world in terms of his rating for the first time and was the youngest player in this circle at this time. In the middle of 2017, however, after comparatively poor tournament results, he fell out of the top 100 again: In his second participation in the US championship, the "2017 US Championship" in March / April 2017, with four defeats, six draws and only one win the penultimate place.

At the in Khanty-Mansiysk discharged Chess Team Championship 2017 in June of that year he was nominated American US for the national team. During the nine rounds he was used seven times on board four, but could not win a game and ended the tournament with five draws and two defeats. He finished eighth with the team.

After starting 2018 with good tournament results - at the traditional Tata Steel chess tournament , he took third place in the Challengers group and clearly won the elite group of the "2018 Spring Chess Classic" in Saint Louis in March He has officially been among the 100 best players in the world since April 2018 and, alongside Parham Maghsoodloo , Alireza Firouzja , Samuel Sevian and Alexei Sarana, is one of five players who were not born before the year 2000.

In March 2019 he was able to defend the title of the "Spring Chess Classic" unbeaten ( Elo performance : 2781). In the US championship played out shortly afterwards, he finished in 7th place among twelve participants.

After consistently good tournament results - including the shared first place at the "47th Annual World Open" at the beginning of July 2019 in Philadelphia - Xiong officially passed the Elo mark of 2700 points for the first time in August 2019 and thus entered the circle of so-called super- Grandmaster before.
