Super grandmaster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Super-Grandmaster is an unofficial, media term for chess grandmasters whose affiliation with the world's best is to be underlined. So it is not an official title of the World Chess Federation FIDE . A certain Elo number is assumed to be the lower limit of membership in this circle - usually chess players with an Elo number of 2700 and higher are currently meant. The expression “super grandmaster” to designate the closer world elite came up in the 1980s, but at that time it was still from an Elo rating of 2600.

Super tournaments

Tournaments that come closest to the ideal of bringing together the world's best chess players are often referred to as “super tournaments”. Only a few tournaments are held annually to which the top runners of the Elo list are invited (in addition to regional grandmasters). Occasionally, players under 2700 Elo can also take part in such events. The tournaments in Wijk aan Zee , Linares and Dortmund are considered to be established super tournaments ; In recent years the M-Tel Masters in Sofia and the Tal Memorial in Moscow have been added. The leading players in the world rankings, including winners of qualification tournaments and young, aspiring players, are invited. These tournaments are generally held as a round-robin tournament and not according to the Swiss system . The Candidates Tournaments to determine the challenger of the world chess champion are commonly the busiest supertournaments.

Entry fees are usually paid.

These tournaments are reported in detail in the chess magazines and on corresponding websites.

Shift in definition

The term “super grandmaster” was initially used for grandmasters with an Elo rating of at least 2600. These top grandmasters formed the manageable circle of the world's elite until the beginning of the 1990s, which, however, quickly expanded. The January 1995 Elo list had 59 players with an Elo rating of at least 2600, including nine with a rating of 2700 and above.

With the list from July 2002, all top 100 players had an Elo rating of at least 2600 for the first time, 12 of them also over 2700. Around this time, the term began to be narrowed down and since then only players with Elo 2700 as “ Super Grand Master ”. In 2010 the number of "super grandmasters" with at least 2700 Elo points was already 37 players. Currently (as of August 2019) there are 38 players who have reached such a high number.

The only "super grandmaster " so far was Judit Polgár , who first reached the 2700 mark in early 2003. She had her career high in July 2005 with an Elo 2735, which puts her in eighth place in the world rankings.
