history

Colonial building in Remedios.

In the area of today's Remedios, the Spanish conquistador Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa, a subordinate of Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar , founded the village of Santa Cruz de la Sabana in the 16th century . Before that, there was already an indigenous settlement there. Estimates of the exact date of the city's founding vary between 1513 and 1524, June 24th 1514 prevailed. This makes Remedios the third oldest city in Cuba after Baracoa (1511) and Bayamo (1513), together with Trinidad .

During the founding phase, the city had to struggle with pirate attacks and freshwater shortages due to its location near the coast, but Remedios experienced constant growth due to the large land allocation. Agriculture and animal husbandry were among the most important economic pillars of the city from the 16th to the 18th centuries. At the turn of the 18th century, the sugar industry began to take root in the area. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the cultivation of coffee, cocoa and tobacco became very important for the region.

During the Cuban Revolution , the 8th Column Ciro Redondo , commanded by Ernesto Che Guevara , moved into Remedios on December 26, 1958, driving the remnants of Batista's administration out of the city. The historic city center with its colonial villas, some of which date back to the 17th century, was declared a national monument in Cuba in 1980.

The center of the historic old town is the Plaza Martí, formerly named after the Spanish Queen Isabel II , with the Iglesia Mayor church from the 16th century .
