Alonso Zapata Ramírez (born August 28, 1958 in Pereira ) is a Colombian chess player .

At the U20 World Cup in Innsbruck in 1977 , he finished second behind Artur Jussupow . In the same year he was voted Sportsman of the Year by the Colombian daily El Espectador . It was the only time in the more than 50-year history of this award that a chess player was chosen. At the Central American Zone Tournament in 1987 in Bayamo , he came in second.

He was able to win the Colombian individual championship several times. He played for Colombia at twelve Chess Olympiads : 1978 to 1992 , 1996 , 1998 , 2002 and 2012 . He also reached third place with the team at the Pan American team championship in 1991 in Guarapuava and first place on the top board in the individual ranking.

In 1978 he was awarded the title of International Master (IM). The title of Grand Master (GM) was awarded to him in 1984. Since 2004 he has held the title of FIDE senior trainer.
