The interzonal Subotica in 1987 was in July and August 1987 as a round robin tournament with 17 participants in Subotica discharged. It was organized by the World Chess Federation FIDE and was intended to identify three participants in the candidate matches for the 1990 World Chess Championship .

Tournament course

Originally 18 participants were planned. The German grandmaster Robert Huebner canceled his participation at short notice. The US-American Lubomir Kavalek retired after six laps. Its results have been canceled. He had won against Ernst, lost to Popović and drew against Short, Marjanović, Tschernin and Prasad. From this point on, two players were free of play in each round. The Hungarian Ribli renounced a playoff for the replacement place against Michail Tal. However, this would have remained meaningless anyway, as no successor was needed in the candidate competition.
