Playoff for 3rd place

The play-off between the two Hungarian grandmasters took place in Budapest in October and November 1979 . He went over six games and ended in a 3-3 draw. With wins in the first and third game, Ribli initially took the lead with 2½: ½. After that Adorján won games 4 and 5 and reached a draw in the last game. This 3: 3 was enough for Adorján to qualify for the candidate matches because of the better Sonneborn-Berger rating in the interzonal tournament.
