Ljubomir Ljubojević ( Serbian Љубомир Љубојевић; born November 2, 1950 in Titovo Užice ) is a Serbian chess player . After Svetozar Gligorić, he is considered the most successful chess player in Yugoslavia.

Life

The young Ljubomir Ljubojević appeared like a comet in the early 1970s on the international tournament arena . His second place at the European Youth Championships 1969/70 in Groningen was rewarded at home with an invitation to the Grand Master’s tournament in Sarajevo . The young man took his chance and won the tournament together with Grand Master Bruno Parma . His victories continued and the world chess federation FIDE awarded him the title of International Master in 1970 and the title of Grand Master a year later .

Ljubojević made many attempts to get among the candidates for the World Cup , but he never succeeded. His highly tactical and risky style always found the enthusiasm of chess lovers , but the top players were able to adapt to him very quickly. He was one of the most successful players of the 1970s and 1980s. His greatest successes include victories in the tournaments of Palma de Mallorca 1971, Las Palmas and Montreal 1974, Orense 1975, Manila 1975, Wijk aan Zee 1976, Titovo Užice 1978, Buenos Aires 1980 and 1981, Brasília 1981, Linares 1985, Belgrade 1987, Brussels 1987, Viña del Mar 1988 and Barcelona 1989. 1979 he defeated Svetozar Gligorić in a competition in Belgrade with 5.5: 4.5.

He is listed as inactive at FIDE because he has not played a rated game since the NH tournament in Amsterdam in August 2010. With his highest rating to date of 2645, he was number 3 in the world in January and July 1983 behind Anatoli Karpow and Garry Kasparov , this was his best world ranking position.

The grandmaster, who lives in Spain, is considered a pioneer and expert in the hedgehog position alongside Ulf Andersson and Mihai Șubă .
