Interzonal tournament Tunis 1985

The interzonal tournament in Tunis 1985 was held from April to May 1985 as a round-robin tournament with 18 participants in Tunis . It was organized by the World Chess Federation FIDE and was intended to determine four participants in the candidates' tournament for the 1987 World Chess Championship . The venue for the tournament was the Hotel Cap Carthage Mediterranee in the suburb of Gammarth .

The 18th participant Slim Bouaziz from the host country Tunisia withdrew from the tournament after six rounds, his results were annulled. He only drew against Morovic and lost his games against Beljawski, Hort, de Firmian, Șubă and Hmadi.

Playoff for 4th place

There was a playoff between the tied players for fourth qualifying place. This took place in June and July 1985 in Moscow. Tschernin prevailed against Gavrikov with 3½: 2½. He won the first and fourth game, Gavrikov won in the fifth round. The other three games ended in a draw.
