Jigal (Yigal) Cohen-Orgad ( Hebrew יגאל כהן-אורגד; * August 30, 1937 in Tel Aviv ; † August 27, 2019 ibid) was an Israeli politician and former finance minister .

Life

After attending a religious elementary school and high school in Tel Aviv , he studied economics and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . During this time he joined the Cherut as well as the affiliated youth association "B'nai Etzel", which later merged with the Betar . After completing his studies, he became an employee of the Ministry of Finance's economic planning authority in 1962 before setting up a company for economic planning and consulting. In 1967 he left the Cherut and became a member of the Free Center Party ( HaMerkas HaChofschi ) for some time before returning to the Cherut, of which he was chairman of the Economic Council. Later he was also CEO of the company "Eitam".

He began his political career with an election as a member of the Knesset , in which he represented the interests of the Cherut within the Likud from June 13, 1977 to November 21, 1988 and was most recently chairman of the Cherut faction. As a member of parliament, he was one of the 23 Likud members who voted against the Camp David Agreement and advocated the evacuation of the Palestinians from the occupied territories.

On October 18, 1983, he was appointed finance minister by Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir as the successor to the resigned Joram Aridor and held this office until September 13, 1984. Even during his tenure, bringing in the budget was difficult due to high inflation . Despite his re-election as a member of parliament, he was not included in the formation of the government and lost his Knesset mandate in the 1988 election.

He later became chairman of the administrative committee of the Ariel University Center in Samaria in Judea and Samaria , which elevated itself from college to university , after which the Justice Department revoked this self-appointment. In addition, he was a board member of the telecommunications company Bezeq .
