HaMerkas HaChofschi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HaMerkas HaChofschi ( Hebrew המרכז החופשי, Free Center Party ) was a party in Israel and a predecessor of Likud .

The party was founded on March 29, 1967, when Shmuel Tamir the Herut with Eliezer Shostak and Avraham Tiar left after disagreements with Menachem Begin had given.

Before the elections, Shlomo Cohen-Tzidon joined the party, who had previously left the Gahal . In the elections, the party received 1.2% of the vote and thus two seats in the Knesset: Tamir and Shostak were MPs.

In 1974 an internal dispute led MPs Elieser Schostak and Ehud Olmert to leave the party and found a new party. Another dispute caused MPs Shmuel Tamir and Akiva Nof to leave Likud and re-found HaMerkas HaChofschi on October 26, 1976. The party was dissolved when on January 25, 1977 Shmuel Tamir and Akiva Nof went over to Tnu'a Demokratit LeSchinui .
