Dan Meridor

Dan Meridor ( Hebrew דן מרידור, Born April 23, 1947 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli politician . Among other things, he was Deputy Prime Minister and as a Likud MP in the 32nd Knesset from May 6, 2009 to March 18, 2013, Minister of Intelligence in the Benjamin Netanyahu cabinet .

biography

After completing school, he completed a law degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , which he completed with a Bachelor of Law . During the Six Day War in 1967 he was a tank commander. After his military service as captain of the armored forces , he worked as a lawyer in Jerusalem from 1973 to 1982 . He later served as Secretary of the Governments of Menachem Begin and Yitzchak Shamir from 1982 to 1984 .

He began his political career on August 13, 1984 with his election as a member of the Knesset , in which he represented the interests of Likud until February 17, 2003 . Most recently he was a member of the Center Party ( Mifleget ha-Merkas ) and of Gesher. In the Knesset he was chairman of the sub-committees on security issues and security legislation from August 1984 to November 1988. Most recently, he was chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense from June 1999 to February 2003. He was also part of the Knesset observer at the Council of Europe .

On 22 December 1988 he was of Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir first appointed to the Cabinet as Minister of Justice and held this position until July 13, 1992. On June 18, 1996 Prime Minister appointed him Benjamin Netanyahu to the Treasury , but this office has already taken over a year later on June 20, 1997 Netanyahu himself briefly after disagreement over exchange rates . On August 29, 2001, he finally became a minister without portfolio in the government of Ariel Sharon, which was in office until February 28, 2003 . After his election defeat, he also lost his government office.

Meridor is currently International Chairman of the Jerusalem Foundation , founded in 1966 by the then Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek . He is also a Senior Fellow of the Israel Democracy Institute. Meridor, who has rejoined the Likud , is named again as a candidate for the next Knesset elections.
