Jerusalem Foundation

The Jerusalem Foundation ( Hebrew הקרן לירושלים) is a global, independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization headquartered in Jerusalem , Israel . The foundation, founded in 1966 by the former mayor of Jerusalem and honorary citizen of the city of Vienna Teddy Kollek , acts as an intermediary between Jews, Christians and Muslims in the city, which is important for all three monotheistic world religions.

According to its own statements, the foundation works for change and growth, for the promotion of sustainable progress in the social, educational and cultural areas as well as for overcoming barriers between different population groups so that all citizens of Jerusalem can actively participate in community life. This includes the design of gardens and parks, playgrounds and sports fields, projects in kindergartens and schools, the restoration of synagogues, churches and mosques, grants for libraries, museums (including for the museum in the Jerusalem Citadel ), theaters and cinemas, funding by artists and support for the poor, the elderly and the disabled. With donations from governments and private individuals, the Jerusalem Foundation supported more than 1,000 projects with a total of more than US $ 2 billion until 2015.

The Foundation is chaired by Mark Sofer. There are agencies in many countries, including in the USA , Italy , Austria and Germany (with offices in Berlin and, since April 2008, in Munich ). First chairman of the Jerusalem Foundation Germany e. V. is the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier , as the successor to the former North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers . President of the Jerusalem Foundation in Austria (association name: Jerusalem Foundation - Association for the Promotion of the City of Jerusalem ) is the former Austrian Foreign Minister Peter Jankowitsch .
