The Catholic News Agency ( KNA ) is a media company supported by the Catholic Church in Germany and founded in 1952 with headquarters in Bonn . KNA produces and markets news in the form of texts, photos, videos, graphics and audio contributions to other media companies as well as to multipliers and decision-makers in church, politics and society. According to its own statements, it is the largest and most powerful Catholic news agency in Europe.

history

Forerunners of the KNA were the Christian News Service (CND) and the Church News Service (KND).

The CND was founded by Alfred Schwingenstein with young Catholics and Protestants in post-war Germany, initially as a non-denominational press service in Munich and was granted a license as early as 1946. A daily press service was published - The Overview  - and a network of correspondents was later set up in Germany, Rome and London. In 1948 the Catholic correspondence for the magazine press started twice a week . In 1952 the CND had to be given up for financial reasons. Editorial rooms, archive and customer relationships were handed over to the newly founded Munich Catholic News Agency (KNA).

In 1948 the two clergymen Wilhelm Peuler and Helmut Meisner organized the Church Intelligence Service (KND) in Cologne, which appeared once a week.

On November 14, 1952, the Catholic News Agency (KNA) was re-established, initially in Munich and later in Bonn. The reporting began on January 12, 1953. The new KNA consisted of 44 shareholders:

In 2009 the shareholder structure was reorganized. The KNA became church property. In 2017, the Association of Dioceses of Germany is the main shareholder with 84 percent through medienhaus GmbH. Co-owners are ecclesiastical publishers, dioceses and the German Caritas Association . Unitas Verlagsgesellschaft as a participation of private publishers was dissolved in 2010.

Companies

The KNA sees itself as a specialist agency for news for Catholic and non-Catholic media and multipliers at the interface between church and society. The focus is on events and church political processes at home and abroad, ethical, socio-political and cultural issues as well as reporting on the Vatican, Europe and the Middle East. The KNA offers (text and multimedia) are primarily aimed at denominational and secular press , radio and television .

After restructuring and reorganization, medienhaus GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the VDD Association of Dioceses in Germany with around 84%, is the main shareholder of KNA GmbH.

In Rome, the KNA and its German-speaking partner agencies in Austria ( Kathpress ) and Switzerland ( Katholisches Medienzentrum ) maintain the joint editorial office Centrum Informationis Catholicum (CIC).

The KNA subsidiary is the dreipunktdrei mediengesellschaft mbH and the KNA-Promedia-Stiftung , a funding initiative for young Catholic journalists. In addition, there is cooperation with the Institute for the Promotion of Young Journalists e. V. (ifp) .

The editor-in-chief of the KNA has been Ludwig Ring-Eifel since 2005 , the deputy editor-in-chief and CvD is Thomas Winkel, head of news Gottfried Bohl. On September 1, 2013, Theo Mönch-Tegeder was elected managing director of the Catholic News Agency by the KNA Supervisory Board and the shareholders' meeting; he succeeded Thomas Juncker . The successor to Mönch-Tegeder, who suddenly died on May 13, 2018, will be Andrea Rübenacker on November 1, 2018 .

Since 2011, the central editorial office of the KNA has been located in the Katholisches Medienhaus in Bonn, together with the editorial offices of Filmdienst , Medienkorrespondenz , kathisch.de and other church media under one roof. In addition to Bonn, there are national editorial offices in Berlin , Augsburg , Frankfurt a. M. , Freiburg , Hamburg , Munich , Nuremberg , Osnabrück , Stuttgart and Trier . International agencies are in Rome , Jerusalem , Bogotá , Brussels and Washington, DC
