Ajelet Schaked (2017)

Ajelet Schaked ( English Ayelet Shaked , Hebrew איילת שקד, Born May 7, 1976 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli politician . She was a member of the Knesset ( HaBajit haJehudi , from December 2018 HaJamin HeChadasch ) since the parliamentary election in Israel in September 2019 and was Israeli Minister of Justice from May 2015 to June 2019.

Life

Ajelet Shakeds mother is Ashkenazin , her father is Iraqi Mizrachi . She grew up in the Bavli district in northern Tel Aviv and attended Ironi Dalet High School . During her military service, Schaked served in the Golani Brigade of the Israeli armed forces as a non-commissioned officer. At the Tel Aviv University , she received the degree of Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and computer science and was until her move into politics software engineer and later marketing manager at Texas Instruments .

Schaked received the Abramowitz Israeli Prize for Media Criticism in 2012 . She lives in Tel Aviv, is married to a fighter pilot and has two children.

Political career

From 2006 to 2008, Schaked was Benjamin Netanyahu's staff secretary . In 2010, together with Naftali Bennett , whom she met while working at Netanyahu, she founded the extra-parliamentary movement Mein Israel , "to counter the spread of lies and misinformation about Israel that are occurring online today".

In June 2012 both left the Likud party to join HaBajit haJehudi . The decision to leave the Likud after several years of membership was not easy for her, but the party had moved too far to the left. That is why the HaBajit haJehudi is the right choice for them . She was the first secular member of the party to run for the primaries. She responded to the criticism by saying that as a secular candidate she could give the party a boost and reach new groups of voters. In the parliamentary elections in Israel in 2013 , Ajelet Schaked was elected as a member of the 19th Knesset.

After the general election in Israel in 2015 , she became Minister of Justice in Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet. At the end of December 2018 she left the party HaBajit haJehudi together with the chairman and founded the Knesset faction HaJamin HeChadasch (“The New Right”) with another member of the parliament . In the parliamentary election in April 2019 , the new party just failed to pass the 3.25% hurdle. Schaked then announced that he would withdraw from politics indefinitely. On June 2, 2019 - a few days after the failure of the formation of a government and the appointment of a new election - she was dismissed as Minister of Justice by Prime Minister Netanyahu. He said she could not stay in office for another six months without being elected. Amir Ohana (Likud) was appointed her successor .

In the run-up to the Knesset election in September 2019 , Schaked had already returned to the political stage. She was appointed sole leader of the HaJamin HeChadash . On June 29, 2019, the party agreed with the Union of Right-wing Parties to stand together in the upcoming Knesset election. The alliance, which was named Jamina , was also led by Ajelet Schaked. For the parliamentary election in March 2020 , she ran at number 3 on the Jamina list, which this time was led by Naftali Bennett.

Political positions

Schaked with President Reuven Rivlin (2015)

In an interview in August 2012, she explained that one of her most important political goals was the development of a strong Jewish identity, which must be part of the education system. She also wants to oppose the post-Zionist organizations and their attempt to transform Israel from a Jewish democratic state into a “nation of all its citizens”. These organizations are involved in a variety of anti-Israel activities, such as the delegitimisation of IDF soldiers or the disinvestment of Israel around the world. She wants to encourage women to look for employment if they so wish. She wants to work to close the “socio-cultural gap” in society, for example to give children in the periphery the same opportunities as children in her Tel Aviv district.

In July 2013, together with Yariv Levin ( Likud ) and Robert Ilatov ( Jisra'el Beitenu ) , she submitted a draft for a nation-state law to anchor the characteristics of Israel as a nation-state of the Jewish people in the basic laws of the state. She later stressed that Jewish and democratic values were equal in Israel and that this would be reflected in the law. The final version of the law, officially called the Basic Law: Israel - The nation-state of the Jewish people , was passed by the Knesset in July 2018.

Shaked played a key role in a law that ended the exemption from military service for Charedim and was passed by the Knesset on March 13, 2014.

On the occasion of the failure of the US mediation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in early 2014, she accused US Secretary of State John Kerry of misdirected efforts. It was not the construction of Israeli settlements that led to the end of the peace talks, but the declaration by Mahmud Abbas to the Arab League that he would never recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Schaked criticized the release of more than 100 Palestinian prisoners in advance of starting these peace talks. Their murderers were handed over to the Palestinians without receiving anything in return. As a result, she opposed the possibility of early release and life imprisonment. The anti-terrorism law passed by parliament in June 2016 stipulates that criminals sentenced to life must serve at least 15 years of their sentence without the possibility of a prior pardon.

Schaked is campaigning for a migration stop from Africa. She expressed concern about the effects of African immigration in the immediate vicinity of her workplace in Tel Aviv. Citizens felt abandoned and the government had to provide answers on what it would do by evicting 1,500 people back to their homes in a few months. The government must take care of the review of executive powers, which is its remit.

After her appointment as Minister of Justice, Ajelet Schaked made it clear that limiting the power of the judiciary was a priority. Governance decisions have been placed in the hands of the judicial system rather than the elected representatives of the people.

In December 2015, Schaked introduced a bill that would oblige non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to disclose funding from abroad. Opposition and left-wing NGOs sharply criticized the project. Opposition leader Yitzchak Herzog said that the draft passed by the cabinet would damage Israel's international reputation. The law was approved in parliament on July 12, 2016.

In January 2017, ten days before Donald Trump's inauguration, Schaked visited the Jewish settlement in Hebron . In relation to this, she posted on Facebook: “No more excuses - we have to continue building in Hebron in 10 days! We must build again to develop Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria . Because this is our home. That is our right. ”The two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has become irrelevant, Schaked also said in January 2017 in an interview with i24news . Muslim nations are falling apart, there is no reason to build another failed state. Schaked went on to say that Israel should implement sovereignty over Gush Etzion and Maale Adumim - two large settlement blocs in the West Bank. "In the long term we are talking about applying the sovereignty of Area C (the West Bank), where there are 400,000 Jews and 90,000 Arabs." You will receive full citizenship and full rights. For areas A and B, there will be another confederation with Jordan and Gaza or with some kind of autonomy.

Controversy

In the Israeli daily Haaretz , commentator Ravid Hecht described Alejet Schaked as "representing an ideology that is not ashamed of its racism". Schaked replied in the Jerusalem Post that Haaretz could look like the New York Times, but that it was far from being a liberal newspaper in the Anglo-Saxon tradition. If Haaretz, read by only about 30,000 Israelis, says she is racist, then she would be looking for a more credible source.

Shortly after the murder of three young people in the West Bank in June 2014, Gideon Resnick of The Daily Beast published an article in which he alleged that Schaked had demanded in a Facebook article to also kill “the mothers of the martyrs” and “follow their sons "Otherwise they would" raise more small snakes ". In fact, the article was written by the late journalist Eliad Elitzur. The Daily Beast would have deleted Resnick's false claim from the article, but the damage had already been done. Many bloggers and newspapers would have relied on the wrong statements and passed them on. In addition, according to Schaked, Gideon translated poorly and took words out of context. The core message of Elitzur's article was that once one side of a war attacks civilians on the other side, it can no longer claim moral status for its own civilians.

In August 2015, Schaked posted a video on her Facebook page that allegedly showed violence by a dark-skinned refugee against an Israeli. The video proves how unbearable the situation is. After being informed that the recording was not made in Israel, she took the video off the network and stated that she had made a mistake.

public perception

Schaked in 2011

In 2015, Brent Scher commented on the online publication The Washington Free Beacon that during Ajelet Schaked's rise to cabinet membership, political opponents consistently belittled their good looks and attacked them sexistically . For example, a Haaretz article that describes Schaked as a “young and pretty” woman in the Knesset with “unbridled youthful enthusiasm” and “childish adoration” of Israeli nationalism, whose “irresponsible violence belies her appearance”. The reason for Schakeds success lies in the fact that she is much more than just a pretty face.

Haaretz commentator Carolina Landsmann characterized Schaked in 2017 as “very well educated. With each interview it becomes more reserved, clearer and sharper. She never raises her voice, is not drawn into provocations, maintains a precise metallic pronunciation and the coolness of a fighter pilot. She doesn't babble, doesn't applaud or wave the Israeli flag. ”Ajelet Schaked is the heiress of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose future lies in the Likud party. As a woman, and a secular one at that, she does not meet the spiritual heights demanded by HaBajit haJehudi's electorate . In addition, the party itself is both religious and chauvinist; that is not enough for Schaked's claims. According to Likud MP David Bitan , Schaked is very popular in the Likud party and will take first place if it runs in the Likud primary.
