The General Journal is a Jewish-American weekly newspaper based in Brooklyn , New York , United States .

history

The weekly newspaper was founded in 1972 by Gershon Jacobson (1934-2005). It first appeared in Yiddish under the title “Der Algemeiner” and cost 25 pence with a circulation of around 18,000 to 23,000 copies per week.

From 1994 an English version with the addition “THE algemeiner JORNAL” (original spelling) was published. Since the founder's death in 2005, the journal has been published in two languages ​​by the Gershon Jacobson Jewish Continuity Foundation .

The distribution of the printed versions is mainly in the New York City area . The editions, printed by the Gershon Jacobson Jewish Continuity Foundation (GJCF), have a weekly circulation of around 100,000 copies. The retail price today is one US dollar . The editor-in-chief is Dovid Efune.

The publisher also runs a free online version with blogging pages and presents unconventional reports, voices about politics and the social and cultural life of the American and international Jewish community.
