Daniel Friedmann ( Hebrew דניאל פרידמן; * 1936 in Palestine ) is an Israeli politician. He was Minister of Justice for the State of Israel from February 2007 to March 2009 .

Friedmann was born into a family that is already in the seventh generation in Palestine. He studied and received his PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard Law School .

In the 1960s and 1970s Friedmann taught as a law professor at Tel Aviv University , where he was dean from 1974 to 1978 . He then taught at Harvard Law School, the University of Pennsylvania and Fordham University, and at the Queen Mary, University of London in London . Friedmann has received a number of Israeli and international awards and is the author of numerous articles and various international treaties, both in Hebrew and in English. In 2020 Friedmann was elected to the Academia Europaea .

Friedmann was a member of the now defunct Democratic Movement for Change and was on the electoral list for the Schinui Knesset in 2003 .

On February 6, 2007, Friedmann was appointed Minister of Justice by Ehud Olmert . He succeeded Tzipi Livni in this office . He is considered a critic of the Israeli judiciary and has previously stated that he is working to reform the system under which judges are appointed to the Israeli Supreme Court. The general reaction to his appointment was initially mixed. On March 31, 2009 Friedmann was replaced as Minister of Justice by Jaakov Neeman .
