Cabinet Levi Eschkol I

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cabinet of Levi Eschkol I ( Hebrew מֶמְשֶׁלֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל הַאַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה Memshelet Yisra'el HaAkhat esre ) is the first Israeli coalition government with Levi Eschkol as prime minister and the eleventh government since the establishment of the State of Israel.

After the elections to the Fifth Knesset on August 15, 1961 , President Ben Zwi commissioned Levi Eschkol on September 14, 1961 to form a new government. Levi Eschkol accepted the contract on condition that David Ben-Gurion becomes prime minister. After the failure of the coalition government under David Ben-Gurion on June 16, 1963, Levi Eschkol took over the formation of a new government. The new government began its work on June 26, 1963.

As in the eighth coalition government of David Ben-Gurion, the governing parties were Mifleget Poalei Erez Yisrael , National Religious Party , Achdut haAwoda , Poalei Agudat Jisra'el and the two parties representing the Arab-born Israelis Shituf weAchwa and Kidma wePituach .

The composition of the cabinet has changed compared to the previous government as follows:

  • Levi Eschkol became Prime Minister and Minister of Defense;
  • Pinchas Sapir replaced Levi Eschkol as finance minister;
  • Abba Eban became Deputy Prime Minister (the second in Israeli history);
  • Zalman Aran became Minister of Education.

Thus, the Levi Eschkol I cabinet presented itself as a "government of continuity".

The government was dissolved on December 14, 1964. This was preceded by a dispute between Levi Eschkol and David Ben-Gurion in the course of the Lawon affair , in which David Ben-Gurion demanded that the Supreme Court investigate the case; Levi Eschkol then resigned from the office of Prime Minister. A week later a new coalition government was formed.
