Schlomo Jisra'el Ben Me'ir ( Hebrew שלמה-ישראל בן-מאיר, Maiden name: Schlomo-Jisra'el Rosenberg ; born August 13, 1910 in Warsaw , Russian Empire ; died April 4, 1971 in Israel ) was an Israeli lawyer , Orthodox rabbi, and politician .

Life

Me'ir was educated at Isaak Elchanan Spektor - Yeshiva and as a young man went to the United States , where he studied at Yeshiva University and New York University . He was ordained a rabbi and received a doctorate in law . He then worked as a lawyer in New York City until 1940 and was a rabbi in Hartford . From 1937 to 1941 he was a member of the board of directors of the American branch of the Jewish National Fund and of Keren Hajessod .

Me'ir immigrated to Israel in 1950 . In the same year he became the world chairman of the Mizrachi movement and chairman of the Israeli national council. In 1951 he was on the electoral list of HaMisrachi, the political arm of the Mizrachi movement. Me'ir did not win a seat, but became a member of the Knesset on August 14, 1952, replacing David-Zwi Pinkas . On January 5, 1953, he was appointed Deputy Minister for Welfare and Social Services . He held this office until the governing coalition failed on January 26, 1954. Me'ir worked towards an amalgamation of the Mizrachi movement and HaPo'el haMisrachi , which was partially achieved when the party introduced a joint electoral list for the 1955 Knesset elections. The goal was fully achieved when the two merged to form the National Religious Party in 1956 . In the elections to the Knesset in 1955, he was able to maintain his seat in parliament and served as chairman of the political department of the newly formed National Religious Party. Furthermore, he was from January 13, 1958 to July 1, 1958 again Deputy Minister for Welfare and Social Services. In the Knesset elections in 1959 he won another seat and was appointed Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs from December 28, 1959 . In the 1961 elections he was confirmed in his post and was again Deputy Minister for Internal Affairs from February 18, 1963. He was also Deputy Minister of Health from March 24, 1965 until the end of the government on January 12, 1966 . After re-election in 1965 and the 1969 elections, he remained Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs until his death on April 4, 1971. His seat in the Knesset was then taken by his son Yehuda Ben Me'ir .
