The Provisional Government of Israel ( Hebrew הַמֶמְשָׁלָה הַזְמַנִּית HaMemschala HaZmanit ) was an Israeli cabinet that existed after Israel's declaration of independence from May 14, 1948 to March 10, 1949. After the first parliamentary election in Israel on January 25, 1949, the government remained in office until the coalition government under David Ben-Gurion took office on March 10, 1949.

Previously, the Minhelet HaAm ( Hebrew מנהלת העם, "People's Government"), which began its work on April 12, 1948. The members all came from the " Provisional People's Council " ( Hebrew מועצת המדינה הזמנית Moetzet HaMedina HaZmanit ). The main task was to prepare for Israeli independence. On May 12, 1948, discussions began on the US peace plan and possible independence. Three members were unable to attend the deliberations: Jehuda Leib Maimon and Jitzchak Gruenbaum were trapped in Jerusalem , while Jitzhak-Meir Levin was in the United States. Six members voted for independence: David Ben-Gurion, Mordechaj Bentov , Moshe Sharet , Peretz Bernstein , Chaim-Moshe Schapira and Aharon Zisling . The following voted for the peace plan: Eliezer Kaplan , David Remez , Pinchas Rosen and Bechor-Schalom Schitrit .

The night after independence was declared, the Arab League declared war on Israel. The War of Independence lasted from May 15, 1948 to July 20, 1949. During the war, the Hurva Synagogue , the main synagogue of Jerusalem, was destroyed.
