Edmond de Rothschild

Baron Edmond James de Rothschild (born August 19, 1845 in Boulogne-Billancourt in the Hauts-de-Seine department , † November 2, 1934 ibid) was a French philanthropist , patron and collector .

Edmond de Rothschild was the youngest son of Baron James de Rothschild , the progenitor of the Paris branch of the Rothschilds . He never took an active part in the development of the family's Rothschild Frères bank . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he served in the National Guard .

In 1873 he acquired the Château Clarke winery . In 1916 Rothschild was accepted into the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

Commitment to Zionism

In 1882 he began to acquire land in Palestine , promoted the founding of Zichron Ja'akov and Rishon leTzion and thus became an active supporter of Zionism . In 1899 he handed over 25,000 hectares of agricultural land including the settlements on it to the Jewish Colonization Association . Furthermore, he made it possible for Russian Jews to settle in Palestine because of the pogroms taking place there in the 1880s and established wine-growing areas there, but failed when attempting to establish a perfume industry there.

Rothschild founded the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association in 1924 , which acquired more than 500 square kilometers in Israel, and made a total of five trips to Palestine between 1887 and 1925 to follow the development of his "colonies" and the pioneer settlement of Rishon leTzion.

It is estimated that he spent more than $ 50 million on these ventures. His eldest son James-Armand and his wife Dorothy de Rothschild were committed to Zionism at his side.

Edmond de Rothschild and his wife Adelheid from the German branch of the family were first buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris , but received their final grave on April 6, 1954 as part of a state funeral near the town of Zichron Ja'akov on the hill Ramat haNadiv (“ Hill of the Benefactor ”).
