Edmond Adolphe de Rothschild (born September 30, 1926 in Paris , † November 3, 1997 in Geneva ) was a French banker and investor. He is a descendant of the well-known Frankfurt banker Mayer Amschel Rothschild .

Life

Edmond Adolphe was the son of Maurice de Rothschild (1881–1957), heir of a third of the Parisian banking house Rothschild, and Noémie Halphen. He studied law in Geneva and Paris. In his second marriage, he married Nadine Lhopitalier in 1963 , with whom he fathered Benjamin de Rothschild (* 1963). In 1968, through the death of his father, he became an heir to billions, which enabled him to enter global business in the real estate, urban development, oil production, supermarkets, banking and tourism sectors through Companie Financière Holding . He was a co-founder of Creafin AG and co-owner of other financial institutions such as Rothschild Bank AG in Zurich, Banca Privata Edmond de Rothschild SA in Lugano and Banque Privée Edmond de Rothschild in Geneva.

Rothschild was a co-founder and venture investor of Club Med , expanded Megève , where his father had previously opened a hotel, and held shares in Shell and De Beers . In 1979 he bought Château Clarke on Médoc for the purpose of viticulture ; with 18% he was also involved in Château Lafite-Rothschild .

Rothschild promoted Israel , whose loans he covered in Europe and to which he gave financial support; among other things he founded the Israel General Bank . The journal Bilanz estimated the fortune of the knight of the French Legion of Honor in 1996 at CHF 1 to 1.5 billion .
