Rothschild Frères

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rothschild Frères was the bank of the French branch of the Rothschild family until 1982 .

background

The bank was founded in Paris in 1817 by James de Rothschild , the youngest of the five sons of Mayer Amschel Rothschild , under the name MM de Rothschild Frères . The Paris bank was connected with the other Rothschild brothers through partnership agreements. After the death of James de Rothschild in 1868, his son Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905) took over the management of the bank, followed in turn by the grandson Édouard de Rothschild (1868-1949) and the great-grandson Guy de Rothschild (1909-2007).

Initially, the bank was mainly a trading company, but at the end of the 19th century it became a real financial institution with numerous holdings (railways, including Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord ; metal works; oil industry). The bank was named Banque Rothschild in 1967 . On February 11, 1982, she was under the socialist government of Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy and President François Mitterrand nationalized and was named Compagnie Européenne de Banque . This was sold to the bank Crédit commercial de France and then dissolved in 1991 after a further sale to Barclays .

Members of the French Rothschild family under David de Rothschild (son of Guy de Rothschild) founded the new Rothschild & Cie Banque (RCB ) in 1983 , which later also acquired NM Rothschild & Sons , the Rothschild bank of the English family branch. The listed Rothschild & Co. (until 2015 under the name Paris - Orleans ) has been the financial holding of the Rothschild family since 2008 .
