Warm-up
In the warm-up, Coulthard was the fastest, followed by Michael Schumacher and Barrichello.
run
Barrichello started well and had already overtaken Coulthard in the first corner. In the back of the field, Eddie Irvine spun off the track and got stuck in the gravel. Jenson Button had an early start and received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty from the race management.
After the first lap, Michael Schumacher was leading ahead of Barrichello, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher , Jarno Trulli and Häkkinen.
In the initial phase, the first three leaders pulled away from Ralf Schumacher, who in turn had a large lead over Trulli. Trulli was always under pressure from Häkkinen.
On lap nine, Luciano Burti spun off the track without contact and ended his race on the gravel. Three laps later, Enrique Bernoldi made the same mistake and had to retire as well.
Rubens Barrichello was unable to follow his team mate and Schumacher gained a lead. Although Barrichello's lap times were slowing down, Coulthard couldn't get past.
Michael Schumacher made his first pit stop on lap 28. He fell back to third, just ahead of his brother Ralf. Three laps later, Barrichello also pitted, so that Coulthard had a clear run. One lap later, Coulthard made his pit stop. He came back on track just before Barrichello.
In the meantime, Trulli had also made his first pit stop, so Häkkinen set fast lap times with a clear run.
After Coulthard was able to break away from Barrichello, Barrichello got faster again and made up time for Coulthard.
In the second phase of the pit stops Michael Schumacher came in again as the first of the leaders. Coulthard took over the leadership. Barrichello came two laps later for his last pit stop, Coulthard another lap after that. Again there was a change of position.
Michael Schumacher led before Barrichello, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Häkkinen.
In the meantime, Häkkinen drove fast lap times and caught up with Ralf Schumacher. Seven laps before the end of the race, however, he had to come in for a third, unscheduled pit stop because the tank system had not worked properly at the second stop. As Häkkinen had a large lead over his pursuer Nick Heidfeld before the pit stop , he did not lose any position.
Michael Schumacher won the race ahead of his teammates Barrichello and Coulthard. It was his 51st victory in Formula 1, which set Alain Prost's record . The remaining points went to Ralf Schumacher, Häkkinen and Heidfeld. Michael Schumacher also secured his fourth world championship title early and Ferrari won the constructors' championship.
