Ferrari was also unassailable in the constructors' championship with 71 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and 93 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
With Michael Schumacher (three times), Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Coulthard (once each), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
Two drivers made their debut in this race. Tomáš Enge replaced the injured Luciano Burti for the rest of the season. He was the first Czech Formula 1 racing driver. Also Tarso Marques was replaced for the remainder of the season. Alex Yoong , the first Malaysian Formula 1 racing driver , drove for him .
Due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the week before the race, some teams started with different liveries. The Ferraris, for example, drove without sponsor stickers and had a black painted nose. The engine covers of the Jaguar R2 were also painted black. A minute's silence was observed at 12 noon on Friday. The first free practice, which should have taken place at that time, had been brought forward.

run
There were two drivers on the grid who had technical problems with their vehicles. Nick Heidfeld and Giancarlo Fisichella were pushed into the pits before the start of the introductory lap and switched to the replacement vehicles with which they had to start out of the pit lane.
All drivers got off their starting positions well. Montoya maintained his lead over Barrichello. Ralf Schumacher started well from fourth position and overtook Michael Schumacher, who however managed to get past his brother on the first lap.
In the first corner the very well started Jenson Button collided with Jarno Trulli. Trulli turned as a result and resumed the race at the end of the field. However, since his vehicle was too badly damaged, he did not finish the first lap. Button lost the front wing of his car and pitted at the end of the first lap. He also had to end the race early on lap five with engine failure.
After the first lap, Montoya was leading in front of Barrichello, Michael and Ralf Schumacher, Coulthard and Pedro de la Rosa .
In the following laps, the first four drivers pulled away from the rest of the field. Montoya was always under pressure from Barrichello. For Coulthard, the race was over after six laps, his McLaren suffered an engine failure. A little later, Ralf Schumacher lost touch with the leaders. On lap nine, Barrichello finally overtook Montoya and led the race. Michael Schumacher put Montoya under pressure but was unable to overtake him.
On lap 15, Eddie Irvine also had an engine failure. Five laps later, Häkkinen ended his race with a gearbox failure.
Michael Schumacher pitted for his first stop on lap 19 and drove back onto the track in fourth. A lap later, Barrichello also made his first pit stop, where he lost time due to problems with the tank system. Montoya took the lead again. The Williams drivers stayed longer on the track and only had to stop once. Montoya pitted on lap 28, Ralf Schumacher on lap 40. Montoya stayed ahead of Ralf Schumacher after his pit stop, but was behind Barrichello, who had to make a second stop. Then Barrichello came back on the track in third place. With seven laps to go, he managed to overtake Ralf Schumacher.
Montoya stayed in the lead until the end. It was the first victory in his Formula 1 career and also the first victory of a Colombian in the Formula 1 World Championship.
