After the Belgian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 51 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 44 points ahead of Ferrari and with 193 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .

At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, there were only a few safety-relevant changes to the route. New TecPro barriers were installed in the della Roggia , Curva del Vialone and Curva Parabolica variants, and additional tire stacks were added to the Curva di Lesmo and the Ascari variant , and the additional TecPro safety barriers were also installed here. In addition, the start-finish straight and the pit lane were re-paved.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was behind the second Curva di Lesmos , the measuring point was 95 meters before the curve. The measuring point for the second zone was 20 meters in front of the Curva Parabolica , the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 115 meters behind the finish line.

Daniil Kwjat (ten), Kevin Magnussen , Vettel (seven each), Sergio Pérez (six), Jolyon Palmer , Stoffel Vandoorne (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean , Kimi Räikkönen , Carlos Sainz jr . , Max Verstappen (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Pascal Wehrlein (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Vettel, Hamilton (three times each) and Fernando Alonso (twice), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Paolo Longini (ITA), Roger Peart (CAN) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA).

free training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 21.537 minutes ahead of Bottas and Vettel. Antonio Giovinazzi was supposed to drive the Haas von Magnussen in this training session . Since, according to the weather forecast , only the first free practice session should take place in dry conditions on the day before training, the Magnussen team did not want to have the rest of the race weekend contest without training on the dry track.

In the second free practice session, which also took place on a dry track, Bottas was fastest in 1: 21.406 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

In the third free practice, Massa set the fastest time in 1: 40.660 minutes ahead of Lance Stroll and Hülkenberg. Because of heavy rain, the practice lasted only 16 minutes, only seven drivers drove a timed lap at all.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. The segment was interrupted after around five minutes after an accident by Grosjean, who had aquaplaning on the newly paved start-finish straight , lost control of his vehicle and hit the lane. Since the start-finish straight was the only place on the course where the rainwater did not run off properly, and this caused aquaplaning for several drivers, various drivers criticized the decision after qualifying that it was “unsuitable for heavy rain” shortly before the Grand Prix “Paving asphalt. Hamilton was fastest at this point. Since the weather did not improve in the following period, the restart of qualifying was repeatedly postponed. After a little more than two and a half hours of interruption, qualifying started again. At the end of the segment, all pilots switched to intermediates. Grosjean did not qualify for the Grand Prix with the lap time he had achieved before the interruption. Bottas was the fastest. The Haas and Sauber drivers and Palmer were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. The Toro Rosso drivers, Alonso, Hülkenberg and Pérez were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Vandoorne suffered damage to the hybrid system, he had to drive his timed lap without the support of the MGU-K and was therefore knocked off tenth. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 35.554 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo. It was the 69th pole position for Hamilton, making him the sole record holder .

Ricciardo was moved back 20 starting positions for the use of the sixth copy of the MGU-H as well as the fifth copy of the turbocharger and combustion engine this season, Verstappen for the use of the fifth copy of the MGU-H and combustion engine in the season by 15 starting positions . Since Ricciardo's gearbox was also changed, the penalty increased by five more places. Even with Verstappen, the penalty increased by five places, as the fifth unit of the turbocharger was installed after free practice. Sainz used the fifth copy of the MGU-H this season, which is why he was also moved back ten starting positions. Alonso was moved 35 starting positions down for the use of the ninth copy of each MGU-H and turbocharger, the seventh copy of each MGU-K and combustion engine, the sixth copy of the energy storage device and the fifth copy of the control electronics. Hülkenberg was moved back by ten starting places because of the use of the fifth copy of MGU-H this season, Palmer by 15 places because of the use of the fifth copy of MGU-H and turbocharger. After qualifying, two further penalties were pronounced: Vandoorne had to have the entire drive unit replaced after the MGU-K failed and was therefore due to the use of the tenth MGU-H and turbocharger, the seventh MGU-K and the seventh combustion engine this season moved 25 starting positions back. At Grosjean, the gearbox had to be replaced prematurely as a result of the accident, and he was moved five starting positions back. Pérez was also moved five starting positions down due to a premature gearbox change.

Because of these penalty transfers, various drivers moved up on the grid. Stroll, who started from second place, started from the front row as the youngest driver in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship. The now third-placed Ocon also achieved his best starting position in the Formula 1 World Championship.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Vettel. It was Hamilton's 59th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, the sixth of which this season. Bottas achieved the ninth place on the podium, thus completing the third Mercedes double victory of the season, while Vettel achieved his tenth place on the podium. The remaining points were placed by Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Ocon, Stroll, Massa, Pérez and Verstappen.

With a total duration of 1:15:32 hours, the race was the shortest Grand Prix that led over the full, planned race distance.

With the win, Hamilton took the sole lead in the drivers' standings of the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship for the first time, ahead of Vettel and Bottas. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes extended its lead over Ferrari and Red Bull.
