The 1969 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 7th and was the eighth race of the 1969 Automobile World Championship .

Reports

background

During the five-week break since the German Grand Prix , only one Formula 1 race that was not part of the world championship had taken place at Oulton Park , which was won by Brabham driver Jacky Ickx .

Significant changes in the field of drivers were the return of Jack Brabham after several weeks of injury and the return of John Miles to the third factory Lotus to further develop the Type 63 . The private driver Joakim Bonnier decided against a further start this season. Ferrari reported only one car with which two drivers, Pedro Rodríguez and Ernesto Brambilla , tried to qualify. Although it was a previous year's model, both drivers managed to do so. As no second vehicle was available, Brambilla had to forego the start.

For Jackie Stewart and Jackie Oliver two cars were registered to test them in practice, but both drivers only achieved lap times with their respective vehicles.

training

The top four of the training session sat in four different vehicles. Jochen Rindt qualified in the Lotus 49 ahead of McLaren driver Denis Hulme and Jackie Stewart on Matra and Piers Courage in the customer Brabham used by Frank Williams .

Jochen Rindt was one of the drivers who did without the usual front and rear wings on the Monza high-speed track. Denis Hulme, standing next to him on the starting grid, decided against this measure, as did around half of the drivers.

run

Although Ferrari only competed with a sparse line-up in the home race, the spectator stands were well filled. Exciting slipstream duels developed at the top, in which eight drivers were involved. In addition to Rindt, Hulme, Stewart and Courage, between whom the leadership changed constantly, these were Graham Hill , Bruce McLaren , Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Jo Siffert . After Hulme, Siffert and Courage had gradually dropped out due to technical defects, a pentathlon remained at the top. Hill's failure with five laps to go reduced the leading group to four drivers.

Stewart briefly lost his lead to Rindt on the last lap, but regained it a few corners later. In the last corner, Beltoise even took the lead briefly with excess speed, but had to go a bit further than his opponents. The first four of the race finally crossed the finish line within 0.19 seconds. This set a record for the tightest finish line, which, however, was also undercut in Monza in 1971 , when the first four were only separated by 0.18 seconds.

Although there were still three races to complete, Jackie Stewart secured his first world title ahead of time with his sixth victory after the previous eight races.
