The Force India VJM10 is the Formula 1 - racing car of Force India for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . It is the tenth Formula 1 racing car from Force India. It was presented to the public on February 22nd, 2017 at Silverstone .

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the VJM10 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.

The VJM10 is the successor to the VJM09 . Since the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, the vehicle is largely a new development. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.

With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, and the rear wing , whose width changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and whose height changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, as well as the diffuser , which now has a total height of 175 mm instead of 125 mm and a width of 1050 mm increased by 50 mm. The nose of the vehicle with its two openings is reminiscent of the previous model, but the openings are now larger and extend to the front wing attachment. To improve the air flow to the rear wing, the car has a noticeable fin on the engine cover. As part of the aerodynamic development during the season, the vehicle was provided with an additional wing at the end of this fin. At the Singapore Grand Prix , there was a modified fin with 32 small wings that stabilized the airflow to the rear wing.

Is driven the VJM10 by Mercedes-AMG F1 M08 EQ Power + , an in vehicle center -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Mercedes AMG High Performance Power Trains with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The sequential transmission of the car is provided by Mercedes. It has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

Unlike the previous model, the VJM10 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels from BBS . This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the VJM10.

Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the VJM10 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

After the first round of the season the driver complained about lack of stability of the VJM10 in the curves, the vehicle is generated particularly in slow corners a stall . Head technician Andrew Green recognized a problem with the correlation of the aerodynamic data determined in the wind tunnel and therefore developed a new underbody that was used from the Spanish Grand Prix .

Painting and sponsorship

The VJM10 was mostly painted in silver during the presentation and test drives before the season. The front and rear wings and the sides of the front of the vehicle were black, and there was also an orange stripe that ran from the nose to the side pods.

Around two weeks before the start of the season, BWT AG was announced as the team's new sponsor. At the same time, the new paintwork of the vehicle was presented, which is now painted in pink, with additional color accents in magenta and silver. The lower area of the chassis as well as the front and rear wings are painted black.

The title sponsor and shareholder Sahara India Pariwar was initially represented as a sponsor on the side pods. This place was taken over by the BWT logo, the Sahara India Pariwar lettering was moved to the side of the monocoque. Other major sponsors of the team are Kingfisher Airlines , a company that is close to the team boss Vijay Mallya , Grupo Carso (with Claro, a brand name in several Latin American countries for cellular networks from América Móvil , the Internet provider Infinitum and Telcel belonging to Telmex ), and Johnnie Walker . In addition, Felio Siby , Hype Energy , the eyewear manufacturer LDNR , NEC Corporation , Pirelli , Quaker State , an oil brand of Royal Dutch Shell , Uralkali and the Asian gaming platform w66.com represented with advertising stickers on the vehicle.
