TELMEX - Teléfonos de México SAB de CV ( NYSE : TMX) is a Mexican telecommunications company . It operates not only in Mexico , but also in Central America and South America , particularly Argentina , Brazil , Chile , Colombia , Peru and Uruguay . Telmex is part of the Grupo Carso group of companies owned by the Mexican entrepreneur Carlos Slim Helú . The company is listed in the Índice de Precios y Cotizaciones (IPC) on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores .

history

The company was founded in 1947 when a group of Mexican investors bought Ericsson's Mexican subsidiary . The same group of investors bought International Telephone and Telegraph's Mexican subsidiary in 1950 , which became the only telecommunications company in Mexico . In 1972 Telmex became a state company. Little was invested in the infrastructure during this time.

In 1990, President Carlos Salinas de Gortari decided to privatize Mexican state-owned companies. Telmex was initially sold to a group of investors consisting of Carlos Slim Helú , France Télécom , Southwestern Bell Corporation . The government has continuously reduced its stake since privatization in 1991.

After the privatization, Telmex invested in modern infrastructure, especially in modern fiber optic technology.

Cellular

After the cell phone boom in the early 1990s, Iusacell started in Mexico. Telecel (Radio Móvil Dipsa) was only a mobile phone provider . Telcel started as the second cellular operator in Mexico in 1995.

America Móvil was part of Carso Global Telecom.

Internet

Telmex built from the mid-1990s under the brand Telmex Internet Directory Personal Internet access on and performed as Internet service provider (ISP) on. In 1996 Prodigy Communications was bought and renamed Prodigy Internet de Telmex . Telmex had over 80 percent market share in 2005, particularly through Prodigy Infinitum .
