At the beginning of October 2012, flight operations were suspended because employees went on strike because of outstanding wages. The flight license was also temporarily suspended. According to media reports, Mallya wants to sell parts of his company United Spirits , India's leading whiskey distiller, to Diageo in order to save the airline. Mallya has already ceded part of the Formula 1 team to Sahara Force India.

In addition to his economic activities, he is a member of the board of the Institute of Economic Studies (India) and the Federation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries and is a member of the upper house of the Indian parliament. In March 2016, it was not clear to the Indian public whether traveling abroad to the UK was a normal activity, or whether Mallya fled the country because of the $ 1.3 billion debt from the financial collapse of his airline. Seven Indian banks tried to obtain arrest. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi came under pressure from the opposition parties in parliament because of Mallya's disappearance. After his passport was declared invalid, an arrest warrant was issued at the request of the financial police in mid-April. In April 2017, Mallya was temporarily arrested in the UK. After paying bail, he was later released pending a hearing scheduled for June.
