Reports
background
After the Italian Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 50 points ahead of David Coulthard and 53 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 80 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 88 points ahead of Williams-BMW . Michael Schumacher and Ferrari were already established as world champions.
With Michael Schumacher (once) a former winner competed in this Grand Prix.
Because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the accident of Alessandro Zanardi at the American Memorial on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz , many drivers drove with different helmet and vehicle paintwork. For example, Jarno Trulli , Michael and Ralf Schumacher had the US flag painted on their helmets, Jaguar drove with black engine covers and BAR had the words USA 2001 and a convalescent greeting to Zanardi affixed to their vehicles.
training
In the first free practice session, Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time ahead of Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Barrichello. Michael Schumacher finished the second free practice as the fastest. He was followed by Häkkinen and Nick Heidfeld .
Qualifying
Michael Schumacher was also the fastest in qualifying and achieved pole position . Second fastest was Häkkinen, but his best time was canceled because he had left the pit lane during the warm-up at a red light. With his second fastest time, he qualified in fourth place. Ralf Schumacher moved up to second place, Juan Pablo Montoya to third.
Warm up
Ralf Schumacher set the fastest time in the warm-up. He was followed by McLaren drivers Coulthard and Häkkinen.
run
At the start of the race, Montoya got away well and attacked Michael Schumacher towards the first corner. This successfully fought back and maintained the leadership position. Barrichello also started well and overtook both McLaren drivers and Ralf Schumacher.
After the first lap, Michael Schumacher was leading ahead of Montoya, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Häkkinen and Coulthard.
In the second lap, both Sauber pilots and Trulli crossed the start-finish line almost simultaneously. When braking into the first bend, Kimi Raikkonen collided with Trulli and knocked off his front wing, whereupon he had to drive into the pit lane for repair work. In the third lap the leaders were close together and Barrichello sat down on the start-finish straight to the left of Montoya and passed him on the outside lane. Shortly afterwards Barrichello took over the lead without a fight from his team-mate Michael Schumacher, who drove with more fuel and therefore a heavier car, only to make one pit stop instead of two.
On lap 24, Ralf Schumacher was the first of the leaders to pit. It dropped from fourth to ninth place. Meanwhile, Barrichello set faster lap times than Michael Schumacher and extended his lead to 13 seconds before he made his first pit stop on lap 27. Montoya was also faster than Michael Schumacher and on lap 34 he overtook him on the start-finish straight. Two laps later, however, he pitted and Schumacher took the lead again. Montoya fell behind the McLaren drivers and Barrichello after his stop. Shortly afterwards the race for Montoya was over, so it was a total failure for Williams, as Ralf Schumacher had spun two laps before and ended his race in the gravel. At the same time, Michael Schumacher went to his first and only stop. Then the McLaren drivers were in the lead.
In second place, Coulthard turned into the pit lane for his only stop on lap 43 and then fell behind the two Ferrari drivers. Häkkinen stayed outside three laps longer. His lead was enough to place himself in second place after his pit stop over Schumacher.
After Barrichello had also completed his pit stop, Häkkinen led in front of Barrichello, Michael Schumacher and Coulthard. With two laps to go, the race was over for Barrichello, his Ferrari had an engine failure.
It won Häkkinen before Michael Schumacher and Coulthard. The other points went to Trulli, Eddie Irvine and Heidfeld.
It was Häkkinen's last Formula 1 victory.
